Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) Recertification.

Current EMTs or within six months of expiration.

To be recertified as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in the State of California you must complete and submit.

  1. As of July 1, 2010 all EMTs recertifying are required to have submitted to a Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Live Scan background check.
  2. Twenty-four (24) hours of Continuing Education hours or an approved EMT Refresher Course (24hours).
  3. Skills Competency Verification form, EMSA-SCV (08/10), with original signatures. This form MUST be the current 08/10 version to be accepted.
  4. Current and valid CPR for the Healthcare Provider card or equivalent.
  5. DOJ and FBI Live Scan Request Form BCII 8016 for an EMT that has not previously submitted to a Live Scan background request for certification or recertification as an EMT in the county you wish to work.

INTRUCTIONS FOR EMT EXPIRED SIX TO TWELVE MONTHS

  1. All of the above.
  2. Additional 12 Continuing Education hours (total 36).

INSTRUCTIONS FOR EMT EXPIRED TWEVE TO 24 MONTHS

  1. All of the above.
  2. Additional 12 Continuing Education hours (total 48).
  3. Apply for and receive your National Registry EMT – Basic card.
  4. Submit to a DOJ and FBI Live Scan background check.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR EMT EXPIRED OVER 24 MONTHS

  1. Complete an EMT Course.
  2. Apply for and receive your National Registry EMT – Basic card.
  3. Submit to a DOJ and FBI Live Scan background check.
  4. Follow Initial EMT process.
